The right way to handle cat litter

GETTING YOUR CAT USED TO NEW CAT LITTER

How to get started? Maybe your kitten or cat is already used to a certain type of litter, but you would like to switch to a different one? What is the best way to do this? A gradual transition often works better for your velvet paw.

1. Mix some of the new cat litter into the existing cat litter.

2. Over a period of 7 to 10 days, mix in more and more new cat litter.

3. After 7 to 10 days, your cat will be used to the new litter and you can fill the litter box completely with the new cat litter.

Is your cat experiencing problems with the current cat litter? If you have a cat that holds its urine too long or is not house-trained, a quicker change is often desirable or even necessary. This is how it works:

1. Buy 2 or 3 different types of cat litter.

2. Clean each litter box and fill each with a different type of filling

3. Check which litter box your cat uses most.

4. Fill all your litter boxes with your cat’s favourite litter.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU CHANGE THE CAT LITTER?

How often you should replace the cat litter isn’t always easy to determine. It depends on the type of litter, the number of cats and the number of litter boxes. In general we can say that with bentonite and silica cat litter it’s best to remove as much urine and faeces as possible from the litter box(es) every day with a cat litter scoop.

Once a week (bentonite) or once every 2 weeks (silica) replace the entire contents of the litter box. With wood pellets, daily removal of dirt is more difficult and you’ll need to change the entire box sooner (approximately every 4 days).
